Downsizing Checklist for West Michigan Families
A simple, room-by-room plan so downsizing feels like a series of small steps, not one giant mountain.
Take your time. Work one room or one drawer at a time, and stop when you are tired. You can print this page or keep it on your phone.
Start here (1 to 2 weeks)
- Decide where you are going and how much space you will have.
- Measure the new space and note which big furniture will fit.
- Make a short list of must-keep items, such as photos, papers, and heirlooms.
- Gather important documents in one place.
Paper and photos
- Sort mail, bills, and old papers. Shred what you do not need.
- Scan or box family photos, so they are easy to share.
- Keep tax, medical, and legal records in a safe folder.
Kitchen and dining
- Keep what you use weekly. Be honest about the rest.
- Set aside special china, silver, and glassware to have looked at before donating or selling.
- Pantry and spices: toss expired items.
Bedrooms and closets
- Pull out clothes you have not worn in a year.
- Check jewelry and watches before giving anything away.
- Decide which furniture will fit the new space.
Living areas
- Pick the favorite pieces. Photograph the rest for family who may want them.
- Art, rugs, and collectibles may be worth more than you think.
Basement, garage, and attic
- Tools, hobby gear, and outdoor equipment often sell well.
- Look for old collectibles, toys, records, coins, and military items.
- Hazardous items (paint, chemicals) need proper disposal.
Before you toss anything
A few categories are worth a second look: coins, jewelry, old toys, military items, art, pottery, vintage tools, and anything handmade. If you are unsure, ask us. A quick look can save you from throwing out something of value.
