How to Downsize a Parent's Home
Helping a parent downsize is part logistics and part emotion. Here is how to do both with kindness.
Start with the conversation
Choose a calm time. Ask what matters most to them instead of telling them what to do. Listen to the stories behind the things. The goal is for your parent to feel respected, not managed.
Set a pace they can live with
One room at a time is plenty. Short sessions beat marathon weekends. Let your parent make the final call on their own belongings whenever possible.
Sort into four groups
- Keep, for the new home.
- Family, to be shared among relatives.
- Sell, through a living estate sale or other sale.
- Donate or discard.
Plan for the hard parts
- Sibling disagreements: set rules early, and take turns choosing.
- Sentimental items: photograph them, so memories stay even when objects go.
- Valuables: have jewelry, art, coins, and antiques looked at before you donate.
- Safety: watch for stairs, clutter, and hazards while you work.
You do not have to do it all yourself. We can handle the selling and the heavy lifting, while you spend time with your parent.
